USD Classic theme for Luminis Portal 5.2
Planning implementation and achieving results
This theme was started on December 2nd, 2014 and finally deployed to production on January 23rd, 2015. The work involved taking mockups in HTML/CSS provided by an outside company and converting them to a working Velocity/Liferay theme for our Luminis portal. It also involved getting feedback from various users and creating a new navigation system, as well as adding a weather widget. The theme was deployed succesfully and we received only positive feedback, woo!
Influencing, communication and teamwork
We met a few times to get user feedback. Avi Badwal, director of ERPT, was also very involved in testing the theme and giving direction on how the theme was supposed to present content. All feedback was taken into account and implemented succesfully. I did not work with other coders on this project.
Analysis, problem solving and creative thinking
I already had experience creating themes for Luminis, so implementation was almost straightforward. However, the main issue with this implementation was that when the outside design company created their mockups, they did so using a template from Luminis 5.0, and so a lot of the variables they used in their CSS had changed significantly from Luminis 5.2. As a result, I ended up spending quite a bit of time tracking the changes and figuring out what broke what.
But the most "fun" bug had to deal with touchscreen support. A week before we were supposed to go live, a few testers reported that their navigation bar was not working. I spent three days looking at it and I finally realized that all coworkers had one thing in common - they all used laptops with touchscreen support. Surprisingly, a jQuery plugin I was using was preventing clicking on a touchscreen for some reason. I had to disable the plugin, but this did not impact the theme functionality in any way.
