We crossed into Mexico today for Liza’s eye surgery, and the Sentri lane in Tijuana, which I had braced for, gave us no trouble at all. The dilation means another trip next Saturday before it’s settled, but the prospect on the other side is a good one: a glasses-free household, which after all these years feels like a small luxury earned. As for the football, PSG took the Champions League final from Arsenal on penalties, and I will confess I had quietly hoped both sides might lose by some miracle of the laws of physics. They could not, so I will take consolation in a year without triumphant Arsenal supporters, and call the game saved.

The rest of the day belongs to the sport entirely. Toluca face Tigres in the Concachampions final, and I expect the Diablos to prevail; fuerza escarlata. After that, Mexico against Australia in the friendly, where my real interest is in the Socceroos. I mean to study them closely, for I will be in their corner against the United States when the World Cup comes.
