The single task today was to return the company laptop, a thing that ought to have taken twenty minutes and instead consumed the better part of an afternoon. No shipping label was provided, so I set out to find one, and the search took me through three locations in turn: a FedEx counter that proved to be no counter at all, an Office Depot that could neither supply a box nor charge the corporate account, and at last a proper FedEx Office where the matter was finally put to rest. Five dollars of my own went to a padded envelope, forty more to postage I should not have owed, and a good deal of patience to the simple discovery that no one along the way had been told what their job was. I will say this for it: a clear instruction at the outset would have spared all of it, and that omission belongs to the people I am leaving, not to me. By way of repair I stopped at Taqueria Los Famosos, where the tacos were good enough to redeem the day and to mark the place as one worth returning to. A poor errand, then, but a fine ending.
