The morning’s small victories came first: the rings closed, and another first-place finish in the Gran Turismo power pack series. I watched George Russell take pole at the Circuit de Catalunya, then surrendered the rest of the day to the World Cup, and it gave back more than its share. Qatar pulled level in the dying minute; Morocco held Brazil to a draw; Scotland edged Haiti by the only goal, which is all the margin Scotland has ever asked for. As I write, Australia lead Türkiye at the half, a goal up against the better side and refusing to know it. I’ll be watching Irankunda the rest of the way. The kid is a beast, and I suspect we’ll be saying his name for a while.
