Another day of the round of thirty-two, two still to go. England put down DR Congo two to one, though they made hard work of it. Cipenga struck early in the seventh minute and the lead held past the hour, until Harry Kane found his voice and answered with a brace, the seventy-fifth and the eighty-sixth, and set the English to their old chant that it’s coming home. It earns them Mexico at the Azteca on Sunday, which should be a spectacle worth the wait. Belgium survived Senegal in a match Senegal all but had won, two goals up until the eighty-sixth, when Lukaku pulled one back, Tielemans leveled at eighty-nine, and the same man ended it deep in extra time to spare a shootout. As for the US, they advanced past Bosnia two to nil, an ugly affair of fouls and stalled clocks that cost Balogun a red card, though Bosnia hadn’t the talent to punish it. Belgium waits in the next round. Without Balogun it will be a tense night, and I intend to be watching.
