The day belonged to Argentina, though not by any honest measure. Egypt had built a two-goal lead, had a third disallowed by VAR for a foul, and then watched the referee hand the match away call by call. Three Argentine goals in ten minutes, and with them the ugly familiar chorus of racism and corruption. I had wanted Egypt to win, and I think they deserved to. Later, Switzerland and Colombia went scoreless through ninety and then to penalties, where Switzerland held on 4-3. Colombia were the better side all evening and still could not finish the job, which is its own kind of cruelty. With that the round of 16 closed, and I found little in the day to celebrate.
