The annual Halloween marathon was at my house this year, and the running order did most of the work. We opened with Event Horizon, which unsettled me rather more than I expected and which I liked for precisely that reason. Then the long walk through the 28 series: 28 Days Later, still possibly the greatest zombie film ever made; 28 Weeks Later, which I would rather not discuss; and then 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple, both of which suggest the franchise has found its footing again. It is a strange thing to watch a series age alongside its audience, the first film a shock and the later ones something closer to an inheritance. Five films is a great deal for one night, and past the third the question stops being which film is good and becomes one of endurance. Still, the marathon is the point of the season, and next year it will be someone else’s couch.
