The day went to the midterm returns. It is early yet, the eastern polls only just closed, but the count so far shows a shift toward the Democrats across the country. The House appears settled in their hands, and the Senate, at this hour, is given roughly three chances in four. Early numbers invite caution, and I am trying to hold to that, though the shape of the night is hard to miss. Whatever the final tally, it reads as a broad rejection of the administration and its policies. I expect to be at this screen until the last of the returns comes in.
