The Round of 16 opened not with a spectacle but with a grind. Canada fell 0-3 to Morocco in a match that never found its footing, ninety minutes of fouls and questionable officiating, and Morocco advanced without ever needing to. The host nation is out, and it is a quiet thing to see a tournament lose the side that carried its crowd. The second match offered little relief: Paraguay and France ground through another afternoon of stoppages before France settled it 1-0. Two matches to open the knockouts, and neither will be remembered. One hopes the round has better football left in it.
