Two matches to record, and only one that will keep me up tonight. Brazil went out to Norway, one goal to two, undone by Haaland as most sides eventually are; a hard way for Neymar to reach the end of his career, and he reaches it now. Norway row on, though I doubt they last past the first serious team they meet. Our own match was the one that mattered. Mexico fell to England, two to three, and the old line fits it too well: jugamos como nunca, perdimos como siempre. We looked the better side, and then one early mistake handed Bellingham two goals in the space of a few minutes, and we spent the rest of the night chasing a game we could’ve won. We fought back. We ran out of time. I came into this tournament certain we would not survive the group; instead we went out swinging in the Round of 16, better than I had any right to expect. That is worth holding onto, even now. I hate this game. I love this game. See you in four years.
